LANGUEDOC ROUSSILLON - OUR APARTMENTS Our apartments in the Languedoc Roussillon are in the centre of the medieval city of Perpignan. Just a few minutes walk from your vacation apartment lies the Spanish Citadel enclosing the Palace of the Kings of Majorca. A structure from the 13th and 14th centuries. Having moved here from Australia, Perpignan has delighted us with numerous restaurants galleries and festivals. The newly reopened market at Place de la Republique is just a few minutes by foot. This market offers fine wine and food from the region at very reasonable prices. The huge weekend market is a short walk in the other direction. Here you will find everything from clothes to food and antiques.
LANGUEDOC ROUSSILLON - PERPIGNAN Perpignan is the capital of the Pyrenees-Orientales the southern most department of the Languedoc Roussillon. Perpignan is located near the Mediterranean Sea and is only about 30kms from the Spanish border. The city retains a distinct Spanish flavour as it was once the capital of the kingdom of Majorca and later Catalonias second-largest city after Barcelona. Perpignans height was in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the kings of Majorca held their court here. Today it is a fascinating city to explore.
LANGUEDOC ROUSSILLON - WINES Languedoc Roussillon produces more wines than any other region of France. Among the grapes grown in this area you'll find Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, Lladoner Pelut and Piquepoul, used in making the red and rosé wines while Grenache blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Maccabeu, Marsanne, Muscat, Roussanne, Vermentino and Rolle are the basis for the whites. Piquepoul grapes are used to make Picpoul de Pinet, a specialty of the Coteaux du Languedoc region. The last decade has seen a focus on quality over quantity in this area and the wine lovers of the world have noticed the change.
